"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
Desert of Glass
Tuesday, 12:23 pm
A few years have passed since Cadaver joined the New Lunar Republic and there is now a full scale war between the Solar Empire and the New Lunar Republic. Along the way, Cadaver has witnessed war on the front lines. He has seen ponies die, and he has even killed. On this day he is part of a scouting party, searching ahead to make sure that it is clear for the rest of the forces in that area.
A blazing sun is beating down on an NLR scouting party in the Desert of Glass. Sand as far as the eye can see, reflecting the suns light making it seem like it has a light of its own. Crossing the same desert is a Solar Empire scouting party, trudging along in the heat. Neither side is aware of the other. And neither, are expecting what is about to happen.
"Hey lieutenant, are we almost there? We`ve been walking for hours," complained a light blue mare.
"Stop whining starlight," replied lieutenant Wallcroft, "Besides, we`ve only been walking for an hour."
Up in the air, acting as a lookout is a grey Pegasus.
"Haste, do you see anything?" asked Wallcroft.
"Nothin` yet lu, just sand and more sand," replied the Pegasus.
Exhausted, the ponies tried to avoid the larger dunes. Doing so, soon they lost sense of direction.
"Cadaver, checks the compass, which way are we going?" asked Wallcroft.
Sweating from the heat under his coat, Cadaver levitates a compass out of his pocket.
"Hmm, we are, going north northeast," said Cadaver putting the compass back in his pocket.
As the group continued on through the desert, they came ever so closer to the Solar Empire scouts. Tired from the flying in the heat, stormy haste landed on top of a large sand dune. At first he didn't notice the enemy soldiers at the bottom of the dune, and then he turned around.
He was cut short, as he was hit by a unicorns spell. The yell and light alerted the rest of the ponies. The rest of them dashed for whatever cover they could find. The Solar Empire ran around either side in an attempt to surround their enemies.
"Damn it," Wallcroft said in displeasure, peaking over the top of the dune she was using for cover. Only to find herself face to face with a cream colored pony, "Whoa!"
She jumped back, startled. The cream colored pony started to bring down her sword.
Wallcroft brought up her for legs in an attempt to block the blow.
She opened her eyes to see a sword surrounded in a field of white magic blocking the other sword. Turning she saw Cadaver running towards her.
"Get out of here lieutenant, warn the rest that the Solar Empire is here!" Cadaver yelled.
"No, I can`t leave. I don't know how to get back," she tried to convince him.
Throwing the compass at her, he turned back towards the attacker.
At that he struck the enemy soldier with a cut to the back of the fore leg. Causing her to fall over, tendons cut. Cadaver lifted his sword to finish off the mare, only to be hit in the head by a rock. Dazed, he looked to where he thought the rock came from. He saw a white and brown blur coming towards him. Suddenly he felt an intense pain in his breast. Grunting in pain he flew off the small dune and landed on his back, his hat falling off.
"Come on Sun Beam, get up, you've got to move," The blur said, helping up the pony he wounded.
Cadaver struggled to get back to his hoofs, when he did he started towards what struck him. Behind him he heard the lieutenant yell a retreat. He was right behind the orange and the white blur when the white one turned to face him, about to strike. It was then Cadaver realized he was missing his sword. The blur stopped mid swing and faced him. What happened next surprised Cadaver; it was a familiar voice that he couldn't put a face to.
"Cadaver?" the white blur said in surprise.
Cadaver stopped walking and tried to focus, his sight tinted red from blood going into his eye. Barely making out the features, he could recognize the many scars covering the face.
Cadaver suddenly became dizzy, his lost balance and last this he felt was him hitting the sand. Then, nothing.
